Delivery is in the fee base
Amazon's referral fee is charged on the total the buyer pays, and that includes the delivery charge. Charging the buyer for delivery doesn't get you out of it. It makes the total bigger, so the fee is bigger too, and you still have to pay the courier.

How the figure is worked out
Each charge is a separate line, so you can see where the money goes. The rate is the one you enter: check it against Amazon Handmade's fees for your country.
- Order total: the item price plus the delivery you charge. The referral fee is taken on this, delivery included.
- Referral fee: a percentage of the order total, taken on every sale.
- Minimum referral fee: where Amazon sets one, the least the referral fee can be on an item. It only matters on very cheap items.
- Monthly plan fee: Amazon waives it for approved Handmade sellers after the first month, so it is not counted against a sale.
- What you keep: the order total, less the referral fee, less what the item cost you to make and what the delivery cost you.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with, Amazon Handmade UK's rate as a starting point to check: an £18 item with £3.95 delivery charged, costing £3.40 to make and £3.20 to send. They are the same figures the Etsy and eBay calculators open with, so the three can be compared.
| Order total | £18.00 + £3.95 delivery | £21.95 |
| Referral fee | 12.24% of £21.95 | − £2.69 |
| Making and sending it | £3.40 + £3.20 | − £6.60 |
| What you keep | £12.66 |
About 48p of that fee comes from the delivery charge. Charging the buyer for delivery doesn't move that cost off you. It raises the amount the percentage is taken from.
Common questions
How much does Amazon Handmade take from a sale?
A referral fee on every sale, taken as a percentage of what the buyer pays. On the example above that is £2.69 of a £21.95 order. The rate differs by country and Amazon changes it, so check Amazon Handmade's fees for yours.
Does Amazon charge the referral fee on delivery?
Yes. Amazon takes the referral fee on the total sales price, which includes the delivery charge the buyer pays. The calculator shows what that costs you on each sale.
Do I pay Amazon's monthly fee on Handmade?
Only for the first month. Amazon waives the Professional plan's monthly fee for approved Handmade sellers after that, so it is left out of a single sale.
What is the minimum referral fee?
Some Amazon marketplaces charge at least a set amount per item, however cheap it is. On Amazon Handmade in the US the referral fee is 15% or $0.30, whichever is greater. Enter the minimum for your marketplace, or 0 if it has none.
Is what I keep my profit?
It is what the sale leaves once Amazon's referral fee, the cost of making the item and the delivery are paid. Enter a true making cost, including waste and failures, or it will look better than it is. The print cost calculator works that out.
Does this include VAT?
No. Enter prices and costs without VAT if you are registered. VAT on Amazon's own fees, and any VAT you charge, are separate.
