Postage is in the fee base
eBay's final value fee is charged on the total the buyer pays, and that includes the postage. Charging the buyer for postage doesn't get you out of it. It makes the total bigger, so the fee is bigger too, and you still have to pay the courier.

How the figure is worked out
Each fee is a separate line, so you can see where the money goes. The rates are the ones you enter: check them against eBay's selling fees for your country and category.
- Order total: the item price plus the postage you charge. eBay's percentage fees are taken on this, postage included.
- Final value fee: a percentage of the order total. The rate depends on the category you list in.
- Per-order fee: a fixed amount on every order.
- Regulatory operating fee: a small percentage of the order total, charged in the UK.
- Promoted listings and currency conversion: percentages that apply only to some orders. Enter 0 when they do not apply.
- What you keep: the order total, less every fee, less what the item cost you to make and what the postage cost you.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with, a UK business seller's starting point to check against eBay's current fees: an £18 item with £3.95 postage charged, costing £3.40 to make and £3.20 to post. They are the same figures the Etsy calculator opens with, so the two can be compared.
| Order total | £18.00 + £3.95 postage | £21.95 |
| Final value fee | 12.9% of £21.95 | − £2.83 |
| Per-order fee | − £0.40 | |
| Regulatory operating fee | 0.35% of £21.95 | − £0.08 |
| Making and posting it | £3.40 + £3.20 | − £6.60 |
| What you keep | £12.04 |
About 52p of those fees comes from the postage. Charging the buyer for postage doesn't move that cost off you. It raises the amount the percentages are taken from.
Common questions
How much does eBay take from a sale?
A final value fee and a per-order fee on every sale, a regulatory operating fee in the UK, and a promoted listing fee or currency conversion on some sales. On the example above that is £3.31 of a £21.95 order. The rates vary by country and category and change, so check eBay's selling fees.
Does eBay charge fees on postage?
Yes. eBay takes its final value fee on the total the buyer pays, and the postage you charge is part of that total. The calculator shows what that costs you on each sale.
Which final value fee rate do I use?
The one for the category you list in. eBay sets a rate per category, so a print listed under toys can pay a different rate from one listed under crafts or home. The calculator opens with eBay UK's crafts rate for business sellers. Check eBay's fees for the category you use.
What is the promoted listing fee?
An advertising fee you agree to when you promote a listing. You choose the rate, and eBay charges it when a sale follows a click on the promoted listing. Enter your rate for a sale that came that way and 0 for one that did not.
Is what I keep my profit?
It is what the sale leaves once eBay's fees, the cost of making the item and the postage are paid. Enter a true making cost, including waste and failures, or it will look better than it is. The print cost calculator works that out.
Does this include VAT?
No. Enter prices and costs without VAT if you are registered. In the UK eBay adds VAT to its own fees, and any VAT you charge is separate.
