Check these against Etsy's current fees policy for your country before trusting the total. They are not the same everywhere and they change — which is why this page asks rather than assumes.

Postage is in the fee base

Etsy's percentage fees are charged on the order total, and that includes the postage the buyer paid. Charging the buyer for postage doesn't get you out of it. It makes the order total bigger, so every percentage fee is bigger too, and you still have to pay the courier.

How the figure is worked out

Each fee is a separate line, so you can see where the money goes. The rates are the ones you enter: check them against Etsy's fees and payments policy for your country.

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with, a UK starting point to check against Etsy's current policy: an £18 item with £3.95 postage charged, costing £3.40 to make and £3.20 to post.

Order total£18.00 + £3.95 postage£21.95
Listing fee− £0.16
Transaction fee6.5% of £21.95− £1.43
Payment processing4% of £21.95 + £0.20− £1.08
Making and posting it£3.40 + £3.20− £6.60
What you keep£12.68

Of those fees, about 42p is charged on the postage alone: 26p of transaction fee and 16p of processing. Charging for postage does not move that cost off you; it raises the amount every percentage is taken from.

Common questions

How much does Etsy take from a sale?

A listing fee, a transaction fee and a payment processing fee on every sale, plus Offsite Ads or currency conversion on some. On the example above that is £2.67 of a £21.95 order. The rates vary by country and change, so check Etsy's fees and payments policy.

Does Etsy charge fees on postage?

Yes. The transaction and processing percentages are taken on the order total, and the postage you charge is part of it. The calculator shows what that costs you on each sale.

What are Offsite Ads fees?

A fee Etsy takes on an order that came from one of its ads on another site. It applies to those orders only, so enter the rate for a sale that came that way and 0 for one that did not.

Why do I have to type the rates?

Because they differ by country and Etsy changes them. A calculator with rates written in would be wrong for most sellers outside the UK, and for everyone the next time Etsy changes a number.

Is what I keep my profit?

It is what the sale leaves once Etsy's fees, the cost of making the item and the postage are paid. Enter a true making cost, including waste and failures, or it will look better than it is. The print cost calculator works that out.

Does this include VAT?

No. Enter prices and costs without VAT if you are registered. VAT on Etsy's own fees, and any VAT you charge, are separate.
